Their API enables individuals and businesses to make informed decisions about their electricity consumption.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The challenge<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>At Monta, we\u2019re committed to shaping the future of EV charging, ensuring that electrification (which is considered key for reducing carbon emissions) is truly sustainable.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By their very nature, EVs are reliant on the world\u2019s energy sources for power. However, the environmental impact of these energy sources varies greatly. EV drivers who obtain their power directly from the national electricity grid, as opposed to other sources such as solar panels, have very little control over the source of their electricity. This makes it difficult for these users to control and regulate their emissions from charging their EV.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We wanted to find a way to give EV drivers greater control over their charging emissions: by enabling them to charge at a time when the carbon intensity of electricity is lower and production from sustainable energy sources is higher.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The solution<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>To enable this, we entered into a strategic partnership with Electricity Maps, who share our goal of reducing global carbon emissions. We receive granular carbon intensity data from Electricity Maps via one standardised API, which informs 2 of 3 variables in our <a href=\"https:\/\/monta.com\/uk\/features\/smartcharge\/\">SmartCharge<\/a> algorithm:&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Charging when <strong>CO2 is<\/strong> <strong>lowest<\/strong>&nbsp;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>And charging when electricity is primarily from <strong>renewable sources<\/strong>&nbsp;&nbsp;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"545\" height=\"571\" src=\"https:\/\/monta.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-1_-Smart-Charging-Illustration.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15592\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/monta.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-1_-Smart-Charging-Illustration.webp 545w, https:\/\/monta.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-1_-Smart-Charging-Illustration-286x300.webp 286w, https:\/\/monta.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-1_-Smart-Charging-Illustration-143x150.webp 143w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 545px) 100vw, 545px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Now, users have the freedom to set their SmartCharge preferences in the Monta Charge app based on what is most important to them, allocating a percentage (%) of prioritisation to each of the three variables; <strong>CO2 intensity, renewables availability, or price<\/strong>. Monta\u2019s SmartCharge algorithm then uses these settings to determine the optimal, bespoke charging schedule.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The integration of carbon intensity data makes the combination of both price and emissions reductions variables possible, which is unlike most Smart Charging algorithms which only consider \u2018price\u2019 variables.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image aligncenter size-full\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"546\" height=\"695\" src=\"https:\/\/monta.com\/uk\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-2_-Smart-Charge-Co2-Savings.webp\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-15594\" title=\"\" srcset=\"https:\/\/monta.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-2_-Smart-Charge-Co2-Savings.webp 546w, https:\/\/monta.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-2_-Smart-Charge-Co2-Savings-236x300.webp 236w, https:\/\/monta.com\/app\/uploads\/sites\/12\/2024\/06\/Image-2_-Smart-Charge-Co2-Savings-118x150.webp 118w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 546px) 100vw, 546px\" \/><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">The results<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>12 months in, it\u2019s encouraging to see the results of our partnership so far.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Over the course of the year, almost <strong>70,000<\/strong> SmartCharge sessions were optimised for cleaner, greener charging, with each charge avoiding <strong>203g of CO2 <\/strong>on average. In comparison, a \u201cregular\u201d SmartCharge session that\u2019s price-optimised avoids just <strong>37g <\/strong>on average &#8211; this is because SmartCharges that are only price-sensitive can sometimes prioritise charging at times with much higher emissions for very small savings in price per kWh. This shows that in combining both price and emissions reductions, a Monta SmartCharge can on average avoid <strong>4.5 X<\/strong> more CO2 in a single charge than a \u201cregular\u201d SmartCharge that is optimised for price only.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\">What\u2019s next?<\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Our partnership with Electricity Maps exemplifies how data-driven solutions can drive substantial environmental benefits. In using real-time carbon intensity data we\u2019re enabling users to charge their EVs with cleaner electricity, which has the power to contribute significantly to the global green energy transition.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Clearly, the more people that optimise for greener, cleaner charging, the better it is for the planet.
