Fresh off the Boston Marathon – one of the oldest and most prestigious races, Niklas brings the same grit to our data stack that he does to 42 kilometres of road. From rewiring how Monta uses business intelligence in an AI-first world to helping tighten up our finance engine room, he’s one of those quiet operators whose work shows up everywhere – in our metrics, our processes, and the occasional table-tennis rivalry.

Take us behind the scenes. What challenge are you working on right now that really excites you?

Business Intelligence at Monta has changed completely. I joined as a Data Analyst, and building Tableau dashboards was a big part of my job – luckily, that’s no longer the case!

With everyone at Monta using Claude Code, and it being connected to all of our other tools and our data warehouse, everybody now has instant access to data. The exciting challenge in that shift is making sure the data is accurate and that our company metrics are defined universally. So my recent focus has been on moving away from Tableau and towards a scalable metrics approach that works with AI tools.

Alongside that, I work very closely with the Finance team. We recently completed a big ERP revamp – basically setting up our accounting system and processes in a much more diligent and structured way. It was a massive project, and it’s always great to see my colleague Lene’s eyes light up when the numbers finally add up.

When do you feel most supported by your team?

There are a lot of great people here at Monta. What I like best is that everyone is kind and understanding – whether priorities shift or I don’t have the capacity to help with a certain request, everyone respects that.

We also have a super transparent and open culture. You can join (or leave) any meeting, and talk to anyone. At lunch, for example, people really mix, and everybody gets along.

I also really enjoy the flexibility and trust here. Nobody is telling me when to work and when not to work, so I can follow a schedule that fits my training – and fit in the occasional table-tennis match with colleagues Vlad, John, and Linus.

What fuels you when the laptop closes?

As you can probably tell, sport is a big part of my life. My first marathon was in 2018, when some university friends and I went to Paris to run it. Ever since, I’ve gotten a lot of satisfaction out of improving my physique. Following the typical endurance-sports journey, I picked up triathlon in the last couple of years, and I’m currently training for my second Ironman. Most recently, I’m really proud I got to run the Boston marathon – such a historic race filled with fast and passionate runners.

A lot of my free time goes into training, but luckily many of my friends are quite sporty too, so they’ll keep me company during weekend sessions.

Outside of sport, I live a pretty calm and content Copenhagen life – meeting friends for coffee, dinners, sauna gus, going to concerts, the movies, or museums.

What are you most excited to build with your team over the next six months?

It’s hard to plan six months ahead these days. But once I’ve fully wrapped up the projects I mentioned, I’d be excited to contribute to a customer-facing product at Monta.

We’ve recently been working on a fraud detection agent that helps protect us and our customers from fraudulent charging and business activity. Another project we’ve got lined up is building an intelligent pricing tool that will allow our operators to set better prices.

I also recently hired a student assistant who’ll be supporting me, so I’m excited to step into being a ‘mini manager’ for the first time. And of course, I’m hoping it’ll let us have even more impact at Monta.

Great technology is built by curious minds.
