How do I set up charge intents?
Understand charge intent types, priority resolution order, and how to configure charging rules by site, RFID, vehicle, or EVSE.
A charge intent defines how a charging session should behave — whether to charge immediately at full power, optimise for the cheapest energy prices, or target a specific State of Charge by a departure time.
Charge intents can be set at different levels — site, RFID key, vehicle, or EVSE — and the system automatically applies the most relevant one when a session starts.
Intent types
Site default intent
The site default is the fallback intent for any session where no more specific rule matches. Every site should have one configured.
Good defaults to start with:
- Charge Now — charge at maximum available power immediately
- Price Optimise — charge at the cheapest hours within the site's constraints
RFID intent
An RFID intent is tied to a specific charge key. When a driver presents that key at any EVSE on the site, the associated intent is used for that session. Use RFID intents when individual drivers or vehicles have different charging requirements.
Vehicle ID intent
A vehicle intent is tied to a specific vehicle. It applies when that vehicle is identified — either via a connected integration or IEC 15118-2 communication. Vehicle intents are useful for fleet deployments where vehicles have specific energy needs or departure schedules.
EVSE intent
An EVSE intent is attached to a specific charge point. It applies to any session at that charger unless overridden by a more specific (RFID or vehicle) intent.
Priority resolution order
When a session starts, the system checks intents in this order and uses the first match:
App → RFID → Vehicle ID → EVSE → Site default
The App intent refers to a driver-set preference via the Monta app.
Scheduled overrides
Any intent can include a weekly schedule — different charging behaviour for specific days and time windows. For example:
- Weekdays 07:00–22:00: Price Optimise
- Weekdays 22:00–07:00: Charge Now (high capacity available, flat tariff)
- Weekends: Charge Now
Creating a schedule rule
- Open the intent you want to edit
- Go to the Schedule tab
- Drag on the weekly grid to create a time window
- Choose Charge Now or Price Optimise for that window
- Save
Priority levels
When multiple EVSEs are competing for limited capacity, priority levels determine the charging order. Higher priority sessions receive power first.
Charge intent types
- Charge Now — charges immediately at the maximum power allowed by the node limits
- Price Optimise — optimises the charging schedule against day-ahead spot prices, respecting all node constraints and any departure time set
