Electricity prices in Belgium are on the rise again. The Commission for the Regulation of Electricity and Gas (CREG) has confirmed the latest electricity tariffs for Q2 2025:

  • Flemish region: €0.3194/kWh
  • Brussels Region: €0.3585/kWh
  • Walloon Region: €0.3617/kWh

This represents an increase of approximately €0.03 to €0.04 per kWh compared to the previous quarter—a rise of nearly 10%. For EV fleet managers, these escalating costs will directly impact reimbursement policies and operating expenses.

New EV charging reimbursement rules

The Belgian tax authorities update their guidelines quarterly to simplify the reimbursement process for employees charging company electric vehicles at home. For 2025, these guidelines are in effect from January 1 to December 31, ensuring reimbursements are not taxed as income. The CREG sets a new reimbursement rate each quarter, which employers must follow. These rates and guidelines are adjusted regularly to reflect fluctuations in energy prices.

Key points include:

  1. Use of connected charging stations: Employees must utilise charging stations equipped with communication systems that accurately record electricity consumption for charging the company car at home.
  2. Inclusion in company car policy: The employer's car policy should explicitly state the reimbursement arrangements for home charging.
  3. Reimbursement based on actual electricity costs: Employers are required to base reimbursements on the employee's actual electricity costs, substantiated by proper documentation. Given the challenges in determining precise costs—due to factors like variable tariffs and solar energy usage—the tax authorities permit the use of a fixed rate per kWh, provided it does not exceed the CREG tariff for the respective region.
