For: Operator users with Admin or Manager rights

Subscription plans let you offer recurring services to your clients — such as operational support, maintenance, leasing, charge point repairs, charging perks, and more. This article explains how plans work, the plan types available, and how to create one in Monta Hub.

What is a plan vs. a subscription?

  • A plan is a predefined template that outlines your services, pricing, billing frequency, and terms. It acts as a reusable blueprint you can apply to many customers — like a product catalogue page.

  • A subscription is the active agreement created when a plan is applied to a specific customer's account or charge point. It tracks billing, renewals, and any customer-specific terms.

Plan types

Plan type Pricing model Use case Description
Account plan Flat fee Platform fees, charge discount subscriptions, SLAs A fixed monthly amount charged from the Account Wallet to the Operator Wallet.
Account plan Priced per charge point Charge point services, revenue shares The account pays per integrated and active charge point. Optionally collect a share of charging revenue (transaction fee, fee per kWh, or fee per charge).
Account plan Priced per account member Fleet management, driver management, charge discount subscriptions The account pays per member who has accepted their account invitation.
Account plan Priced per charge key Accounts that issue RFID cards to drivers or fleet members The account pays per charge key it holds that is not blocked, expired, or deleted. The count updates automatically each billing period.
Charge subscription plan Flat fee / Priced per account member Charge discount subscriptions Either a monthly flat fee or fee per active account member paid by the Account to the operator. In return, account members receive a charging discount on the operator's charge point network.
Charge point plan Priced per charge point Leasing, SIM card support, DC fees, tax refund services (Denmark) Applied one-by-one to individual charge points. Optionally collect a share of charging revenue.
Sub-operator plan Priced per charge point Billing sub-operators efficiently Applied to a sub-operator; the sub-operator's operator pays per active charge point in the sub-operator.

Subscription payment methods

Subscription fees are paid using one of three billing methods set on the account:

Billing method How it works Card required?
Pay via Operator Transaction The operator covers all account transactions; the balance is settled monthly between operator and account. No
Pay via invoice Subscription fees are billed to the account via monthly invoice handled outside Monta. No
Pay as you go Subscription fees are charged directly to the account payment card on the renewal date. Yes

For Pay via Operator Transaction or Pay via invoice, subscriptions can be applied and approved immediately. For Pay as you go, if no card exists on the account, the subscription is created with Paused status (reason: Payment method missing). The account admin receives an email to add a card, and the subscription activates automatically once a card is added.

Create a plan

The steps below use three examples to illustrate the creation flow. The same structure applies to all plan types.

Example 1 — Team plan, priced per charge point

Select the type of plan

  1. In Monta Hub, navigate to Customer Relations in the left-hand menu.

  2. Click on Plans & Subscriptions.

  3. Click the +Create a plan button in the top-right corner.

  4. Choose Team plan → Priced per charge point.

Details and Pricing — define the pricing of your subscription:

  • Plan name — the name of your subscription plan.

  • Summary of your plan — a short description of the services you are offering.

  • Monthly subscription price — the price the customer will pay per month, including VAT. Monta takes a commission (a small fee depending on your contract) at the time of purchase.

Operator fees — optionally collect a share of charging revenue. There are three sets of fees, each with its own switch: charge fees, roaming fees and reimbursement fees (coming soon). See Operator fees below for what each fee does.

Subscription Settings — define activation, renewal, and cancellation behaviour:

  • Subscription approval before activation — choose whether subscriptions activate immediately or require manual approval.

  • Payment and renewal date — when the first payment and renewals occur.

  • Subscription cancellation — choose which users can cancel the subscription.

  • Available for — which account types can hold the plan: All accounts, Professional accounts, or Private & personal accounts. See Who a plan is available for.

After finalising all details, review the plan summary and click Create plan.

Example 2 — Charge subscription plan

A charge subscription plan lets you offer account members a charging discount on your network, billed as a flat monthly fee or per active account member. It's the plan type to use when you want to bundle charging perks into a recurring membership — for example, a reduced kWh rate for employees or fleet drivers subscribing to your charging service.

For full step-by-step instructions, see How do I create a charging subscription plan?

Example 3 — Charge point plan

Select the type of plan

  1. In Monta Hub, navigate to Customer Relations → Plans & Subscriptions.

  2. Click +Create a plan and choose Charge point plan.

Services — define the services included:

  • Plan name and Summary — name and short description.

  • Offer tax refund — tick this box to add tax refund as a service. For tax refund plans, see the Create and Manage Tax Refunds article.

  • Type of service — select On-site repair (send an installer when required) or Charge point replacement (replace broken hardware). As a service provider, you take responsibility for hardware maintenance.

Pricing & fees — monthly price and the same operator fees as in Example 1.

Details & Settings — fill in the remaining fields:

  • Detailed description of your service — include types of services and your support channels.

  • Terms & conditions — include eligibility, support, payment terms, and cancellation policy.

  • Contract URL — optionally link to a contract for the client to sign.

  • Support email — your support contact for clients (not related to Monta Support).

  • Publish plan in Marketplace — if published, end users can find and apply via Monta Charge. If not published, you apply subscriptions manually via Monta Hub.

  • Supported charge point models — specify which brands and models you support.

  • Subscription approval before activation, Payment and renewal date, Subscription cancellation — same as Subscription Settings above.

After finalising all details, review the plan summary and click Create plan.

Who a plan is available for

Account plans and sub-account plans have an Available for setting, at the end of the plan's Subscription settings step. It decides which account types the plan is for. The plan page shows it under General information. Charge point (EVSE) plans don't have it, because they bill one EVSE.

Available for Who it covers
All accounts (default) Every account type
Professional accounts Business accounts only
Private & personal accounts Private and personal accounts only

What it does depends on the plan:

Plan Effect of Available for
Account plan Only accounts of the chosen type can get the plan. When you apply a subscription to an account, only plans that fit its account type are listed, and applying a plan to the wrong type is refused. The same filter applies to plans offered in the Monta app and through the Partner API.
Sub-account plan Only EVSEs owned by accounts of the chosen type count towards the sub-account's bill. You can fine-tune this per subscription later under Billed EVSEs.

Good to know

  • An account on a plan can't switch to an account type the plan doesn't allow. Cancel the subscription or move the account to another plan first.

  • If you change Available for on an existing plan and choose to apply the change to existing subscribers, their billed account types change too. For sub-account plans this changes what they're billed: narrowing it stops billing EVSEs of the removed types, and widening it starts billing more.

  • Plan changes are approved by Monta before they take effect, like any other plan edit.

  • Some plans set up by Monta are limited to private only or personal only. They show that value, but you can't pick it for new plans.

Operator fees

Operator fees are taken from each charge session on the charge points or accounts that hold your subscription, and paid into your Operator Wallet. You set them on the plan's Operator fees step. There are three sets, each with its own switch, so you can charge differently depending on the type of session.

Fee set Applies to
Charge fees Every session not covered by a roaming or reimbursement fee
Roaming fees Sessions by drivers from other networks (roaming)
Reimbursement fees (coming soon) Reimbursed sessions: an employee charging at home, paid by the employer

All fees are excluding VAT. VAT is added on top. The examples below use 25% VAT.

Charge fees

Shown in Hub as Operator charge fees. Apply to every session that isn't covered by a roaming or reimbursement fee. Tick Apply fee to non-paid charges to also take them on free sessions.

Fee What you collect Example
Transaction fee A percentage of the session price 2% → 2.5% of the session price with VAT
Start fee per charge A fixed amount per session 2 DKK → 2.50 DKK per session
Charge fee per kWh A fixed amount per kWh charged 1 DKK/kWh → 1.25 DKK/kWh, so 6.25 DKK on a 5 kWh session

Roaming fees

Shown in Hub as Operator roaming charge fees. Apply to sessions started by drivers roaming in from another network. Roaming must be enabled on the charge point.

Fee What you collect If left at 0
Roaming transaction fee A percentage of the roaming session price The transaction fee from Charge fees is used
Start fee per roaming charge A fixed amount per roaming session No start fee is taken
Roaming charge fee per kWh A fixed amount per kWh on roaming sessions The charge fee per kWh from Charge fees is used

Reimbursement fees (coming soon)

Coming soon. Reimbursement fees aren't available yet. Until they are, the Operator reimbursement charge fees section isn't shown on the Operator fees step, and reimbursed sessions don't get operator fees. This section describes how they will work.

Shown in Hub as Operator reimbursement charge fees. Apply to home charging sessions that an employer reimburses: the employee charges at home on their Private Account, and the employer pays for the session from its Reimbursement account (see How do I set up reimbursements?). Use them to charge a different, often lower, fee on employer-paid home charging than on public charging.

The fees apply when the employee's home charge point, or their Private Account, holds a subscription to your plan.

Fee What you collect If left at 0
Reimbursement transaction fee A percentage of the reimbursed session price The transaction fee from Charge fees is used
Start fee per reimbursement charge A fixed amount per reimbursed session The start fee from Charge fees is used
Reimbursement charge fee per kWh A fixed amount per kWh on reimbursed sessions The charge fee per kWh from Charge fees is used

Who pays the fees

  • The employer pays. The fees are taken from the Wallet of the employer's Reimbursement account and paid into your Operator Wallet.

  • The employee pays nothing. Their reimbursement is the full session amount. The fees are charged to the employer on top of it, not deducted from it.

  • Each fee is its own transaction. The employer sees them in the Reimbursement account's Wallet transactions, linked to the session: Percentage operator fee, Fixed operator fee (per kWh) and Fixed fee for starting charge.

  • Monta's platform fee isn't charged on reimbursed sessions. Only your operator fees apply.

  • A low balance doesn't stop the fees. They're taken even if the Reimbursement account's Wallet balance is low, and the balance can go below zero.

Example

An employee in Denmark charges 20 kWh at home. The session costs 50 DKK, which the employer reimburses. Your plan has a reimbursement transaction fee of 5%, a start fee of 2 DKK and a charge fee of 0.10 DKK/kWh. The employer's company is VAT-registered in Denmark.

Excl. VAT Incl. 25% VAT
Transaction fee (5% of 50 DKK) 2.50 DKK 3.13 DKK
Charge fee (20 kWh × 0.10 DKK) 2.00 DKK 2.50 DKK
Start fee 2.00 DKK 2.50 DKK
Fees paid by the employer 6.50 DKK 8.13 DKK

The employee receives 50 DKK. The employer pays 50 DKK for the session plus 8.13 DKK in fees, and you receive the 8.13 DKK.

How VAT works

  • You enter the fees excluding VAT, and VAT is added on top when they're charged.

  • The fees are a sale from you to the employer. Monta isn't a party to that sale.

  • The reimbursement itself carries no VAT. Only the fees do.

  • Where a country has a separate VAT rate for electricity, that rate is used.

The VAT rate depends on where the charge point is and whether the employer is VAT-registered:

Situation VAT on the fees
You, the employer and the charge point are in the same country That country's VAT rate, e.g. 25% in Denmark
Charge point in another EU country, employer VAT-registered 0%, reverse charge. The employer accounts for the VAT.
Charge point in another EU country, employer not VAT-registered Your country's VAT rate
The Reimbursement account has the same VAT number as you (you reimburse your own employees) No VAT. It's treated as an internal transfer.

If you have a Wallet in the charge point's country, that Wallet is used and the sale counts as domestic in that country.

When reimbursement fees don't apply

Case What happens
Payout schedule is End of month No operator fees are taken. Reimbursement fees only apply when the employer pays out in Realtime (after each session). End of month is the default, so ask employers who should pay fees to switch the employee to Realtime.
United States and Canada Not available. Reimbursed sessions there don't get operator fees.
Norway, Strømstøtte Reimbursements that use the Strømstøtte government contribution are paid out at end of month, so they don't get operator fees.
Employee's account is VAT-registered The session counts as professional charging. The fees from Charge fees apply instead, and the employer still pays them.
Free (zero-price) sessions Only the start fee and charge fee per kWh can apply, and only if the plan applies fees to non-paid charges. The transaction fee is 0% of 0.
The home charge point has no account No operator fees are taken.

Good to know

  • A field left at 0 uses the matching fee from your charge fees, not zero. To charge less on reimbursed sessions, fill in all three fields.

  • If the employee's charge point and their Private Account both hold subscriptions with fees, the fees from each subscription are taken.
