How do I create a Load Management group?

This article explains how to create and configure a Load Management group (formerly Load Balancing) in Monta Hub and Monta Control, including power distribution, external meters, sub-groups, and scheduled load management.

For: Operators and fleet managers configuring Load Management (LM) for their charge points in Monta Hub or Monta Control

Load Management (previously known as Load Balancing) distributes available electrical capacity across multiple charge points to prevent overloading. This guide covers how to create and configure a Load Management group in Monta. For a technical deep-dive, download the Load Management technical white-paper.

How do I create a team-level Load Management group?

Use this option if your charge points are all set up within one team.

  1. Open the Team where your charge points are located.
  2. Select the Charge Points tab.
  3. Navigate to Load Management (the page opens in Monta Control).
  4. Click + Create.

How do I create an operator-wide Load Management group?

Use this option to group charge points across different teams that share the same physical site.

  1. Open Charging points from the left-side menu.
  2. Click Load Management.
  3. Click + Create.

How do I configure available amps and power distribution?

  1. Navigate to the Configure section.
  2. Name the Load Management group.
  3. Fill in Total amps available — the amps available per phase for both charging and the building.
  4. Select a Power distribution method:
    • Equal share — power is distributed equally among all charging cars on the site.
    • First come, first served — cars are prioritized by order of starting the charge.

How do I add an external meter for dynamic load management?

Dynamic Load Management requires an external meter connected to Monta. Monta currently supports Perific and ABB ModBus meters.

  1. Toggle on External Meter and select the meter type.
  2. Select the placement:
    • Including charge points — meter measures building consumption plus charge points.
    • Excluding charge points — meter measures only building consumption.
  3. Enter a Dynamic buffer — a safety buffer to prevent exceeding total capacity when building consumption changes. The recommended value is the highest expected increase in building consumption within one minute.
  4. Enter a Backup charging limit — the number of amps to use if the meter cannot communicate current consumption to Monta.
  5. Click Save changes.

How do I create a sub-group?

A sub-group represents a subset of charge points sharing the same available amps on a site. To create a sub-group, click the + button in the Load management sub-groups section. External meters can only be added to the main group, not to sub-groups.

How do I add or remove charge points from a group?

  1. Open Charging points from the left-side menu.
  2. Click Load Management.
  3. Select the Load Management group.
  4. Scroll down to the Charging Stations section and click the + button.
  5. Use the search bar to find charge points by address or serial number.
  6. Select the charge points to add. Note:
    • A charge point can belong to only one group at a time.
    • Selecting a charge point with more than one connector automatically adds all connectors to the group.
    • Check the supported charge points list to confirm your charge points support Load Management.

Advanced charge point settings

Once a charge point is added, you can configure:

  • State — view whether the charge point is Available, Busy, or Unavailable.
  • Phase order — the order of phases on the charge point. Confirm with the electrician who wired it. Used for phase rotation.
  • Max amps — the maximum amps available for the charge point. Enter whole numbers only (for example, 61, not 61.6).
  • Prioritize — prioritized charge points receive current first when distributing among active charge points.
  • Connector phases — automatically detected, but can be overridden. Options: Auto Detect, Single Phase (AC), Single Phase (AC – Split Phase), Three Phase (AC), DC.

Click the pen icon on a charge point to access these settings. Click Save after making changes.

How do I set up scheduled Load Management?

Scheduled Load Management ensures less power is available during peak hours and shifts energy use to off-peak periods such as overnight.

  1. Create a Load Management group and add your charge points following the steps above.
  2. Scroll down on the group page to the Schedule section.
  3. Toggle on the Schedule option.
  4. Select the desired days of the week.
  5. Set the time range by specifying start and end times.
  6. Enter the amp value for the selected time period.
  7. Click Submit to save.

Notes:

  • Any time not covered by a schedule defaults to the total available amps for the site.
  • Enter whole numbers for max amps. Fractional values (for example, 61.6 A) are rounded down to 61 A.
  • For very large sites, create a few short overlapping schedules to ramp up available current gradually rather than switching all at once.
