Roaming is the industry terminology for sharing charge points with other networks. Monta is sharing charge points on networks like Hubject and Gireve but also does direct sharing agreements with companies like Plugsurfing. When a user makes a charge on a Monta charge point through another app, this is called a roaming charge.

Please note that Roaming is only available for Enterprise and Business plan.

Enable Roaming on a charge point

Roaming can only be enabled on Active charge points with a valid address.

  1. Open the charge point in Monta Hub
  2. In the Pricing & Access section, scroll down to Roaming
  3. Toggle on Enable roaming
  4. Select the Roaming Price Group you want to apply
  5. Click on Save changes

Create a new Roaming Price Group

Roaming Price Groups can be created and edited from the charge point settings, when you want to activate Roaming, as shown above.

This step shows you how to do it from the Price Group section of the Team.

  1. Open the Team and select Price Groups
  2. Click on + Add new price and select Roaming price
  3. Name the price and select an amount
  4. If needed, add any additional fees: Start fee, Fee per minute, Idle fee.
  5. Check out the total kWh price and Save

Apply a Roaming Price Group

Roaming Price Groups can be selected in the process of enabling Roaming (see first step).

This step shows you how to apply the Price Group on multiple charge points at once.

  1. Open the Team and select Price Groups
  2. Select to edit the Price Group
  3. Select the charge points, on which to apply the Price Group
  4. Click on Apply

Create an additional roaming fee

This is only available for Operator accounts, who are service providers and have set up a Custom Subscription Plan. For a detailed description of the roaming fee, please see here.

If you have already set additional fees via Custom Subscriptions, we recommend to update them, in order to reflect your current pricing needs.

  1. Navigate to Subscriptions on the Operator menu
  2. Click to Edit the Subscription
  3. Scroll down to Custom and enter the additional fee
  4. Click on Save

Private roaming for home users

Private roaming is currently in beta and must be enabled by Monta on request. Availability and behavior may change as the feature matures.

What is private roaming?

Private roaming allows home and private teams to open their charge points to external roaming partners (for example, RFID cards or charge keys from other networks) without publishing the location on public maps.

With private roaming, home users can expose their charge points to roaming partners while keeping their address and exact location private.

With private roaming:

  • Show charger on map is disabled
  • The address and precise coordinates are anonymized before being shared via OCPI.
  • Location data is broadcast in a masked form to roaming partners such as Hubject and direct OCPI connections.

Roaming partners can authorize and start charging sessions, but the charge point does not appear on public maps and the exact address is never disclosed.

Why private roaming?

Previously, multi-income households had no way to get employer reimbursement for more than one person if there was only one charge point in the household. Private charge points can now be enabled for roaming with RFID cards while hidden from maps and anonymized addresses. Roaming price groups define the reimbursement rate – all of this fully compatible with Hubject and other OCPI networks

How to enable private roaming (via private teams)

Prerequisite:

Private roaming must be enabled for your operator by Monta. Contact Monta support or your operator to request activation.

Once private roaming is enabled, follow the standard roaming setup flow, with one critical difference: the location must remain hidden.

  1. In charge point Pricing & Access, set the charge point to Public. This makes the charge point eligible for roaming connections.
  2. Scroll down and disable Show charger on map. This ensures the address and location are anonymized before being broadcast.
  3. Enable roaming on the charge point. Use the standard roaming enablement flow.
  4. Create a roaming price group
    • Define the price that roaming partners will see and transact on.
    • Note: In certain countries (for example, Belgium), it is illegal to profit from reimbursed charging. In these cases, the price must be set to the reimbursement tariff. A legal disclaimer will be shown to the user.

How the charge point appears to roaming partners

  • The charge point is available for roaming authorization and pricing via OCPI.
  • The precise address and coordinates are masked.
  • Partners see an anonymized location that supports session start, without exposing the private address.
