The pain points and growth opportunities impacting UK Charge Point Operators in 2025

The UK’s transition to electric mobility is at a pivotal moment. As more drivers switch to EVs, the pressure on our charging infrastructure has never been greater. This report highlights both the tremendous progress that has been made and the critical challenges that must be overcome if we are to build a reliable, scalable, and user-friendly charging ecosystem.

Executive summary

img abstract car

We surveyed over 200 senior executives from UK CPOs to gauge the state of play across the UK EV industry. Exploring operational challenges and demands faced by providers in the space, the results reveal a disconnect between hardware capabilities and incompatible software. Meanwhile, more stringent regulations are outpacing current service delivery, with uptime falling short of mandated requirements, and grid-related issues pointing to a need for increased cooperation between CPOs and infrastructure providers.

With the introduction of UK public charge point regulations ordering 99% uptime and contactless payments, complexities also remain when it comes to getting charging stations and Charge Point Management Systems (CPMS) to work together. Keeping in line with Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) compliance calls for full device compatibility and configuration, and constant software bug patching – all of which can be particularly challenging for CPO managers without dedicated technical expertise.

When looking to procure hardware, CPOs commonly look for proven, reliable performance. But slow transitions from fault detection to issue resolution point to a reactive nature, where in reality, proactive diagnostics and maintenance are paramount. This needs real-time visibility and insights that can be immediately leveraged in one platform.

Key report findings:

Regulatory complexity

Just 3.9% of UK CPOs meet or exceed the 99% uptime requirement now mandated by law. Meanwhile, 26% sit in the 97–98.4% range, just shy of regulatory targets, revealing a significant gap between government regulation and operational reality.

Limited maintenance capabilities

Almost half (45%) of CPOs cite slow maintenance response times as their biggest challenge towards maintaining reliable uptime. Over 40% are also limited by a lack of control over firmware and component durability, and grid and supply issues.

Hardware performance in demand

Proven reliable performance is a top feature requirement for almost half (48%) of CPOs looking for an ideal hardware partner. However, just 7% said they were extremely confident about the reliability of their hardware mix.

Partner with Monta

Reliable charging through an end-to-end platform

By using an embedded, end-to-end platform, Monta delivers a more reliable charging experience – a critical need for Charge Point Operators (CPOs). Because all data is housed in a single, unified system, it becomes significantly easier to troubleshoot, diagnose, and resolve issues when they occur. This reduces downtime and ensures a consistent, high-quality charging experience for drivers.

In addition, Monta’s platform creates a foundation for faster innovation with AI. With operational, transactional, and customer data (including OCPP, payments, app usage, and customer ratings) aggregated in one place, Monta can train and deploy smarter AI models faster than anyone else in the industry. This gives CPOs the advantage of predictive insights, optimised operations, and continuous improvement of the customer experience.
