FAQ’s
Roaming is when a driver starts a charging session at your charger using a different charging app, not the Monta app. When you enable roaming on a public charger, it becomes visible and accessible on other charging networks and apps (such as Plugsurfing, ABRP, Shell Recharge, Ionity, and many others). The driver initiates the session from their preferred app, Monta handles the full backend, session management, billing, and settlement, and you receive your revenue instantly to your Monta wallet.
In short: Enable roaming = more drivers find and use your charge points, no extra work on your end.
There are two types of roaming fees, depending on the direction of the charge:
- Inbound roaming (external drivers charging at your charge points via another network)
- Outbound roaming (your drivers charging at other networks’ charge points)
Managed roaming (default): Monta handles everything, all OCPI integrations, contracts with roaming networks, monthly financial settlement with EMSPs, and working capital. You simply toggle on roaming and set a price. Monta handles the rest on your behalf.
Self-managed roaming: You manage your own bilateral agreements directly with specific EMSPs and CPOs via OCPI. Monta maintains the technical integrations and the commercial relationship is managed by the CPO. This gives you full control over which partners you work with and at what price, but comes with operational overhead and working capital requirements.
Most operators choose managed roaming for simplicity. Self-managed is best suited for large operators who already have existing roaming agreements and want full pricing autonomy.
Inbound roaming: External drivers (using other networks’ apps or charge cards e.g., a Shell card or Plugsurfing account) charge at your charge points. You receive revenue. Monta settles with the EMSP on your behalf.
Outbound roaming: Your drivers charge at other networks’ charge points using their Monta-linked account. Monta handles the OCPI connection and settlement with the external CPO.
It’s a simple setup in Monta Hub:
- Go to your charger settings
- Toggle Roaming on
- Set a roaming price – this is required, it cannot be left blank
Roaming can only be enabled on charge points configured as public. Once enabled, your charger is pushed to all roaming networks Monta is integrated with – no individual contracts or integrations needed on your end.
Tip: If you want your charger discoverable via roaming but not visible on the Monta map, you can enable roaming and disable “Show on map” separately.
Monta is connected to a wide range of roaming hubs and networks, including Hubject and other major European and US platforms. You can view all active roaming partners directly in Monta Hub. Monta manages all OCPI integrations and contracts. You don’t need to sign individual agreements with each network.
For specific partnerships (e.g. Shell, Ionity, Fastned), bilateral agreements can be set up directly
through Monta Hub.
Note: Roaming partner availability varies by region. If a specific partner or market isn’t yet
available, contact your Monta customer success manager.
When it comes to managed roaming, Monta handles everything. When a driver charges at your station via a roaming network:
- Monta collects payment from the eMSP (the driver’s network)
- Monta settles with all roaming partners at the end of each month
- You receive your revenue instantly to your Monta wallet. No waiting for end-of-month reconciliation
You never need to invoice roaming networks, chase payments, or manage working capital for roaming transactions.
If you opt for the self-managed roaming route, then Monta will maintain the technical OCPI integration while you will be responsible for agreeing commercial terms with different eMSPs. You can select the eMSPs with whom you want to manage things and set distinct pricing for them.
You will then be responsible for invoicing and collecting revenue from your counterparties at the end of each month.
Your roaming price is what external drivers pay when they charge at your charger via another network. In Monta, your roaming price is different from your public price. You can choose to set the same price or a higher price.
We directly pass through the price you set and then what shows up in eMSP apps is based on the markup that they select to apply.
- European markets: Roaming is more prevalent. Many operators set a 10–20% premium over their public price to account for the higher transaction fee.
- US market: Roaming is less developed here. It’s generally recommended to set your roaming price equal to your public price to keep things simple and not discourage usage.
- B2B / private networks: If roaming is used for internal reimbursements (e.g. friends & family or partner access), you can set a subsidised rate.
Yes. In Monta Hub under Customer Relations > Bilateral Roaming Agreements, you can:
- Create exclusive agreements, restrict roaming to only specific EMSPs (whitelist)
- Set discounts for specific partners e.g., give a preferred partner 10% off your roaming price
- Block specific networks from accessing your charge points
This is useful if you want preferential rates for a key partner, or if you don’t want certain networks accessing your stations.
VAT on roaming depends on your market and contract:
- European markets: Monta adds VAT on top of the roaming price shared with the roaming network. The industry standard is that shared roaming prices are ex-VAT.
- US: Sales tax does not typically apply.
- Cross-border B2B roaming: Reverse charge 0% applies.
If you have questions about your specific VAT setup, contact Monta’s roaming team or your customer success manager.
