What is a charging subscription plan?

A plan is a template for a recurring service you offer to your accounts. A subscription is when an account signs up for — or is assigned to — one of your plans, at which point billing begins.

A charging subscription plan is a specific plan type designed to give drivers discounted or fixed-price charging at your charge points. Unlike other plan types (which charge for services such as support, maintenance, or leasing), a charging subscription plan bundles a charging discount into the plan itself. Subscribers pay a monthly fee and in return receive the discount whenever they charge at your eligible charge points.

Discount types

When you create a charging subscription plan, you attach a charging discount to it. There are two types of charging discount:

  • Percentage discount — a fixed percentage off the charge point's regular price. The subscriber pays the standard price minus the discount percentage.

  • Price Group — a price group you define replaces the charge point's pricing entirely for subscribers. This can be a fixed price or a spot-based price. The subscriber is billed at the price group's rate instead of the charge point's default price.

Once a discount has been created, its type cannot be changed.

Before you start

  • You need a charging discount to attach to the plan. You can create it during the plan creation flow or in advance in Plans & subscriptions > Discounts.

  • If you want to use a Price Group discount, create the price group first in Global configurations > Price groups.

Create a charging subscription plan

  1. Go to Plans & subscriptions in Monta Hub.

  2. Open the Plans tab and click Create plan.

  3. Select Charging subscription plan as the plan type and continue.

  4. Enter a name and optional description for the plan.

  5. Set the monthly fee — the amount subscribing accounts pay each month.

  6. Choose the visibility:

    • Public — the plan appears in the Monta Charge app. Drivers can find & subscribe to this plan from the Monta Charge or your WL app. Throughout their charging journey they see a banner telling them that there is a Charging Subscription available with which they can save money on charging. For a guide to what drivers see during sign-up, see How can drivers subscribe to a charging plan in the Monta app?

    • Private — the plan is hidden and must be assigned manually to specific accounts. This means, as you sell your services to your customers, you then just apply this plan on their account via the Hub.

  7. Add a charging discount — see below for how to create one.

  8. Optionally, restrict which charge points the discount applies to by setting eligibility using a list of charge points or locations. Without an eligibility rule, the discount applies at all your charge points.

  9. Configure the subscription settings — define how the subscription activates, renews, and behaves for subscribers:

    • Activation — choose whether new subscriptions activate immediately or require your approval first.

    • Payment and renewal date — set the day of the month on which subscriptions renew and billing runs.

    • Payment renewal — set what happens if a renewal payment fails: cancel the subscription immediately, or keep it unpaid for a set number of days before cancelling.

    • Where can drivers find this plan? — select which apps display this plan to drivers. Available for public plans.

    • Cancellation policy — for private plans, set how subscribers can cancel. For public plans, drivers can cancel at any time from the Charge app, as required by law for consumer subscriptions.

  10. Review and save the plan.

Create a charging discount

You can create a charging discount in two ways:

  • During plan creation — when you reach the charging discount step, use the inline option to create a new discount.

  • Plans & subscriptions > Discounts — create discounts independently and link them to plans at any time. A discount can be linked to multiple plans.

To create a discount:

  1. Select Create a discount.

  2. Choose the discount type:

    • Percentage discount — enter the percentage off charging.

    • Price Group — select a global price group. The selected price group replaces the charge point's pricing entirely for subscribers: energy price, start fee, minute fees, and idle fees all come from the price group. You can set different price groups for AC and DC sessions by enabling Different price groups for AC & DC.

  3. Give the discount a name (internal, not shown to drivers).

  4. Optionally, set a budget cap to limit how much of the discount a subscriber can use per subscription period. There are two types:

    • Monetary cap — a currency amount. The discount applies until the cap is reached; the subscriber pays the standard price for the rest of the period.

    • kWh limit — a per-subscriber energy allowance. Each subscriber gets their own kWh limit, and charging beyond it is priced normally. Leave empty for no limit.
