What is it?

Open Charge Point Protocol (OCPP) is an open-source communication protocol that facilitates the exchange of information between an EV charger and its backend management system. The vision of OCPP is to make any EV charger work with any charger management software, which is why we support OCPP in Monta and are compatible with any hardware brand out there that supports OCPP. The OCPP compliance of each charge point will be tested by Monta to ensure compatibility.

Who can take advantage of it?

With OCPP, charge point operators are not locked into using a specific manufacturer or management system, and can easily switch to or add other charge point brands to their sites.
As OCPP has become the industry standard of connecting a backend to a charge point and by supporting OCPP, manufacturers can connect to a multitude of backends and provide their customers with the backend flexibility they want.

What are we solving?

Connecting charge points to our system with ease and ensuring that we can connect a multitude of different manufacturers and models to our system.

Why is it important?

OCPP allows both manufacturers and CPOs to be future-proof due to its flexibility. It is cost-efficient, convenient, and more accessible. Because of it, Monta can connect a multitude of charge points and increase access to the EV charging infrastructure.

OCPP in action

Use case 1

Car icon

EV Driver

You are an EV driver travelling through Europe. Since OCPP is the standard protocol among many charge points, that allows Monta to build an extensive network of CP across Europe (225k and counting) that you can easily locate and use, eliminating range anxiety and improving your EV driving experience.

Use case 2

CPO

You are a CPO and want to switch to a different backend since your needs have changed and your current backend management system is unable to meet them. Because your charge points support OCPP, that offers you flexibility when it comes to backend changes, while also being cost-efficient, and, if desired, allowing public access to your charge point will increase your revenue.

Use case 3

CP customization

Manufacturer

You are a hardware manufacturer deciding on what kind of communication protocol to use for your CPs. You decide to become OCPP compliant because it’s becoming the industry standard and you can ensure that whoever your client is, they can use the backend of their choice.
Charge point manufacturers are skilled in making hardware and we want them to focus on that. By using Monta as the backend and app, that allows manufacturers not to worry about UX and UI, since our very own dedicated specialists will be taking care of that.

Are we compatible?

We recommend adding support for all Feature Profiles, i.e. “Smart Charging” Profile for Load Balancing, “Firmware Management” for remote firmware upgrades via OCPP, “Local Auth List Management” for allowing offline approval of RFID cards, and “Remote Trigger” to request messages such as MeterValues.
Moreover, we can give you a list of all the OCPP configurations required for a specific charge point connected to Monta and modify them afterwards, if needed. Since we want to make this process as easy as possible, our Powered by Monta partnership programme offers help in the implementation and improvement of the OCPP implementation.

FAQ
