What are tax rates for?

Tax rates are for jurisdictions where VAT does not apply automatically — for example, US states with sales tax, Canadian provinces, and other sales-tax countries. You create the rate yourself, then apply it to the price groups that charge drivers on your network.

For VAT countries (most of the EU and many others), you do not need to create anything: Monta applies the country VAT rate automatically. The VAT sub-tab next to Tax rates shows the resulting VAT rule activity.

Where do I find tax rates?

  1. In Monta Hub, open the sidebar and select Finance.
  2. Select Tax rates. The page opens with two sub-tabs:
    • VAT — read-only overview for VAT countries. Shows Monta's VAT rule activity (matrix, recent transactions, decisions).
    • Tax rates — where you create and manage rates for non-VAT (sales-tax) countries.
  3. Select the Tax rates sub-tab.

In a VAT country, the Tax rates sub-tab shows the message "Tax rates aren't supported in VAT countries" — the country's VAT is applied automatically and there is nothing to configure here.

Where do I find the VAT overview?

Open Finance → Tax rates → VAT. The VAT sub-tab is a read-only panel that shows Monta's VAT decisions for charging in VAT countries — the matrix, the recent rule activity, and the resulting rates. You don't configure anything on this sub-tab; it exists so you can see what Monta is applying.

Operator level or team level?

Tax rates exist at two levels:

  • Operator-level tax rates — created once on the operator. Available to every team under the operator. Use when the same rate should be reusable across the whole network.
  • Team-level tax rates — created on a single team. Only available to that team's price groups.

Both levels are managed through the same Tax rates sub-tab; the level is set by where you create the rate (operator settings vs. team settings).

How do I create a tax rate?

  1. In Monta Hub, open the sidebar and select Finance.
  2. Select Tax rates, then the Tax rates sub-tab.
  3. Select Create.
  4. Fill in Name — a short description, for example "Florida sales tax".
  5. Choose Type — Sales tax or Excise duty.
  6. Choose the rate type — percentage (for example, 7.5%) or per-unit (for example, 0.05 per kWh).
  7. Enter the Value, then save.

The rate appears in the Tax rates table. Creating the rate does not apply it to any charging — you still need to attach it to a price group (see next section).

How do I apply a tax rate to a price group?

A tax rate only takes effect once it's added to a price group. Each pricing entry inside a price group (kWh, per minute, fees, spot pricing) has its own Sales tax picker.

  1. In Monta Hub, open the sidebar and select Pricing, then open the price group you want to tax.
  2. Find the pricing entry to tax — for example the kWh tab, Per minute tab, Fixed kWh tab, or a fee card.
  3. In that entry's Sales tax section, toggle on Sales tax if it isn't already on.
  4. Select Add tax rate and pick the rate from the combobox. Operator-level rates appear alongside team-level rates in the same list. You can add more than one rate per entry — they stack.
  5. Save the price group.

The selected rates appear as chips on the pricing entry. Remove a rate by clicking the × on its chip. To create a new rate without leaving the editor, use Create a new tax rate… in the combobox; to jump to the full manager, use Manage all tax rates →.

The Sales tax picker is hidden on price groups for VAT countries — VAT is applied automatically instead.

How do I edit or delete a tax rate?

  1. In Monta Hub, open the sidebar and select Finance.
  2. Select Tax rates, then the Tax rates sub-tab.
  3. Open the row's actions menu and select Edit or Delete. To remove several rates at once, select multiple rows and use the bulk actions bar.

Deleting a rate that is applied to a price group may affect pricing on future charges — check the Used by column before deleting.
