What is charge point release detection?

This article explains how release detection works, why it matters for idle and minute fees, and how to check whether your charge points support it.

For: Operators and team owners who apply idle or minute fees on their charge points

Release detection is a charge point capability that determines whether a charge point can communicate when a charging cable has been unplugged after a session ends. Monta uses this information to apply idle and minute fees accurately.

Why does release detection matter?

Idle and minute fees are applied per minute after a session finishes, until the driver unplugs their car. These fees are configured via a Price Group and are designed to encourage drivers to move their vehicles once charging is complete.

For these fees to work correctly, the charge point must report two events: when charging ends, and when the cable is unplugged. Without this data, Monta cannot calculate the fee accurately, which may result in overcharging or undercharging the driver.

An idle or minute fee applies per minute after charging ends, until the cable is unplugged from the charge point.

How do I check if my charge points support release detection?

Supported charge points page

You can check which charge points support release detection on the supported charge points page.

Charge point page in Monta Hub

If you apply a price group with an idle or minute fee to a charge point that does not support release detection, the fees will appear highlighted in red on the charge point page in Monta Hub. This indicates the fee cannot be applied reliably.
