How do I set up Dynamic Load Management?

How to prepare for and configure Dynamic Load Management in Monta, including requirements, meter setup, charge point groups, and advanced settings.

For: Charge point operators on a Pro, Business, or Enterprise Monta plan setting up Dynamic Load Management.

Dynamic Load Management (previously known as Load Balancing) lets you use your site's full potential by distributing available power across charging cars at maximum speed. You can create Load Management groups on a single charging site or across multiple charging sites.

Requirements

  • A Pro, Business, or Enterprise Monta plan
  • A charge point brand and model that supports Load Management in Monta
  • Charge points added to a team and connected to Monta

Step 1 — Add and connect the charge points to Monta

Before setting up Dynamic Load Management, add and connect your charge points to Monta. You can add them one at a time or in bulk.

Step 2 — Create a Load Management group

If all charge points belong to the same charging site, create a Load Management group from the specific charging site page in Monta Hub.

If charge points belong to different charging sites, create a Load Management group from the Multi-Site Load Management portal.

When creating the group, consider the following:

  • What are the total available amps per phase for the charge points and the building?
  • How do you want to distribute power to the charge points?

You can distribute power equally to all active charge points or prioritise cars in order of arrival. Additional prioritisation settings are available after charge points are added to the group.

Step 3 — Set up an external meter

Dynamic Load Management requires an external meter configured to report meter values to Monta. Supported meter types:

  • Perific meters (formerly Enegic) — connect to the internet via local Wi-Fi and report meter values to the Perific backend, which forwards values to Monta.
  • ABB ModBus meters — connect to a charge point, which sends meter data to Monta over OCPP (Open Charge Point Protocol) in DataTransfer messages.

When configuring the meter in Monta, consider:

  • Does the meter measure only the building's consumption, or charge points as well?
  • What is the highest expected increase in the building's consumption within one minute?
  • What is the minimum amps the system should use if the meter cannot communicate with Monta?

Step 4 — Add charge points to the group

You can only add charge points that support Load Management and are connected to Monta.

  • In a standard (single-site) group, select charge points from the same charging site.
  • In a multi-site group, select charge points from different charging sites, including those not assigned to any site. Use the search bar to find by address, name, or serial number.

Advanced group settings

Multi-level Load Management

You can create a sub-group within a Load Management group that shares the same total amps. You can limit how many amps the sub-group can use, add charge points, and create nested sub-groups. The power distribution of the main group applies to all charge points across all sub-groups. External meters cannot be added to a sub-group.

Advanced charge point settings

After adding charge points to the group, you can customise individual charge point settings. Consider:

  • What is the phase order on each charge point? (Consult your electrician)
  • What is the maximum amps available for the charge point?
  • Do you want to prioritise a specific charge point, for example based on its location on the site?

If your charge point brand is not supported

If your charge points are not on the supported list, contact Monta with the following details so we can evaluate compatibility:

  • Brand and model of the charge point
  • Brand and model of the external meter (if relevant)
  • Any relevant site details

Locally managed Load Management setups

Some charge point brands manage Load Management locally on their own system without communicating current data to Monta. In these cases, Monta's Dynamic Load Management cannot be applied.

The only locally managed setup that can be connected to Monta is Easee charge points using a Perific external meter. Many other local Load Management setups allow you to operate charge points from Monta while the native charge point system manages Load Management.

Charge point brands that support this arrangement include: Schneider, Charge Amps, CTEK, Enelion, Easee, Zaptec, Hager, Wallbox.
