How do I set up pricing for EV drivers?
An overview of how to create and apply price groups for EV drivers in Monta, covering price group types, pricing methods, optional hourly tariffs, additional fees, and minimum charge fees.
Price groups are how you configure charging prices for EV drivers. This guide covers the key steps for setting up pricing that matches your needs.
Step 1 — Select the price group type
Choose the price group type based on what you want to price and who it applies to.
| Price group type | Applied per | Applied when | Set up in |
|---|---|---|---|
| Public price | Charge point | Charge point is set to public and an EV driver who is not a team member charges. | Monta Charge, Monta Hub |
| Member price | Team member | User is invited to the team as a member and charges on a team charge point. | Monta Charge, Monta Hub |
| Reimbursement price | Team member | You have set up a reimbursement configuration. | Monta Hub |
| Cost price | Charge point | Both paid and unpaid charges, for tracking electricity cost. | Monta Charge, Monta Hub |
| Roaming price | Charge point | Charge point is set to public with roaming enabled and a driver charges via a roaming platform. | Monta Hub |
Step 2 — Select the pricing type
Monta supports the following pricing types. Roaming price groups support only Fixed kWh and hourly tariffs.
| Pricing type | Description | Example |
|---|---|---|
| Spot price | Per kWh, using the electricity spot price for the charge point's location at 60- or 15-minute intervals. | See the dynamic pricing guide. |
| Fixed kWh | Per kWh at a fixed rate. | 0.2 EUR/kWh × 30 kWh = 6 EUR |
| Pay per minute | Per minute of charging. | 0.2 EUR/min × 30 min = 6 EUR |
Step 3 — Apply an hourly tariff (optional)
For Spot price or Fixed kWh pricing, you can apply an hourly tariff that factors into the final price calculation. Select an available tariff based on the charge point's location, or build a custom tariff.
Step 4 — Create additional charging fees (optional)
Additional fees can apply during or after the charge is complete.
| Fee type | Description | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Starting fee | One-time fee when the charge begins. | |
| Charging fee | One-time fee after a specified charging time. | |
| Minute fee | Per-minute fee after a specified charging time. Can be set to apply until the charge completes or until the cable is released. | The "cable is released" option requires charge point support for release detection. |
| Idle fee after fully charged | Per-minute fee if the car remains connected after charging is complete. A maximum amount can be set. | Requires charge point support for release detection. |
Step 5 — Apply the price group
Apply the price group to the relevant charge points or team members. Key facts about price groups:
- Price groups are created within a team and applied to charge points or members in that team.
- You can create multiple price groups of the same type.
- Price groups can only be managed by the team owner and team admins with configuration rights.
Minimum charge fee
Guest users
When a guest user (paying by credit card) starts a session, some payment providers require a minimum transaction amount. Monta applies a minimum charge fee in these cases:
- If the session cost is below the minimum, the guest is charged the minimum amount instead.
- If the session cost is at or above the minimum, the actual amount is charged.
Example: If a session costs 0.40 USD and the minimum fee is 0.50 USD, Monta charges 0.50 USD.
| Currency | Minimum charge fee |
|---|---|
| DKK | 2.50 |
| EUR | 0.50 |
| USD | 0.50 |
| GBP | 0.30 |
| NOK | 3.00 |
| SEK | 3.00 |
| CHF | 0.50 |
App users (wallet-based charging)
The minimum charge fee does not apply to app users. If the session cost is below the threshold, Monta deducts the exact amount from the user's wallet.
Example: If a session costs 0.40 USD, Monta deducts 0.40 USD — no minimum is applied.
